From a world of rich estates and sleepy horse trails, Sandton Central has, since then, metamorphosised into a bustling hub of economic development. Known as South Africa’s richest square mile, with a myriad of Blue Chip companies having found a home in the district, much has been done to ensure that Sandton Central does not become a concrete jungle.

“Over the past few decades, Sandton Central has experienced a corporate development explosion. The advent of new hotels and influx of tourists, the streets of Sandton Central are bustling. Since inception, the Sandton Central Management District (SCMD) has placed a premium on ensuring that key corners, pavement areas and pedestrian routes remain as green and functional as possible,” explains Paul van Rooyen, district improvement manager for the SCMD.

Having recently found a likeminded soul in the form of the Protea Hotel Balalaika Sandton, a long term, large scale beautification project is set to roll out in the district, with the Maude Street Island first on the agenda.

“Balalaika has been part of the Sandton Community for 61 years, and has watched the district grow from humble grasslands into the financial epicentre of South Africa. The hotel is part and parcel of the district and we believe that we have a responsibility to ensure that Sandton Central is more than just bricks and mortar.

The partnership with the SCMD forms part of our Corporate Social Investment portfolio, and the Maude Street Island upgrade is really just the beginning of our commitment to beautifying the area,” says Jörg Zwinscher, general manager of the Balalaika.

The design of the upgrade is currently being kept under wraps, with the official unveiling scheduled for 5 November 2010. For more information on Sandton Central, its various projects and how you too can get involved, call (011) 784 8400 or visit www.sandtoncentral.co.za.
