Emergency personnel had their hands full after numerous collisions on the N3 North- and Southbound between Cato Ridge and Camperdown just out Pietermaritzburg this morning.

A truck driver and motorist lost their lives while ten other motorists sustained moderate injuries after a collision involving fifteen trucks, six cars and a taxi. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and found both the truck driver and the motorist deceased. The remaining ten patients from various cars were treated for possible back injuries and lacerations. All patients were transported to various hospitals in the greater Pietermaritzburg area for further medical care.

It is believed that the collision occurred just after six o’clock this morning due to thick mist in the area. As the mist lifted from the area, the true perspective of the accident was seen. Trucks were found in the centre medium and cars scattered across the highway.

It is believed that thirty cars were involved in the accident over a stretch of five kilometers. All traffic came to a halt travelling towards Pietermaritzburg as the highway had to be closed. A temporary detour was created to guide commuters via the Cato Ridge and the Camperdown on and off ramps.

Traffic is still severely affected in this area and most likely be affected for some time.
