A fourth KwaZulu-Natal alcohol evidence centre was unveiled in Durban on Wednesday to curb drunk driving in the province.
“Drunk driving remains one of the biggest killers in South Africa and this centre is an important step in our mission to reduce the number of fatalities on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads,” said provincial MEC for transport, Willies Mchunu.
The centre was part of a countrywide initiative by South African Breweries (SAB) to deal with drunk driving.
SAB general manager Greg Uys said his company had committed R9m to supply nine centres across South Africa with equipment.
The centres had breathalysers whose results were admissible in court and a closed-circuit television network to monitor the testing process, he said.
“Research has shown that effective enforcement and prosecution are the most effective ways to change attitudes and behaviours among those who drink and drive,” he said.
Other centres had been opened in Pietermaritzburg, Ballito and Port Shepstone.
