More than a million fines have been issued for various traffic offences across South Africa since October. Several motorists have also been arrested for speeding. They have been slapped with fines ranging from R4 000 to R20 000.
Earlier this week, an Mpumalanga motorist was arrested for driving at 205km/h on the N4 near Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng. The Transport Department’s Logan Maistry also confirms that more than 3 million vehicles and drivers have been stopped and checked over the past two months.
The ‘stop and search’ initiative is part of the Transport Department’s “Make Roads Safe” campaign and the new National Rolling Enforcement Plan, which Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele announced in September. Maistry says in the Free State alone, more than 219 vehicles were taken off the road for being unroadworthy.
Since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, an average of 2 000 motorists have been arrested every month for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, and others arrested for possession of dagga, overloaded taxis and buses.
