Three people including a two year old toddler have been seriously injured in a collision on the southern freeway near Congella, Durban this morning.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found two light motor vehicles in the taxi lane of the freeway. Members of public directed paramedics to a motor vehicle, that had stopped to assist the injured, and found the two year old toddler lying in the back seat. The child had suffered a possible head injury after being ejected from the Honda Ballard.

While emergency personnel were stabilising the toddler, the remaining paramedics started to assist with other patients that had been injured. The passenger from the Honda was found seated outside the car and complaining of severe pain to her left arm and back region. The driver of the Toyota Conquest was found seated inside the car. Both patients needed advanced life support intervention before they could be moved into the ambulances.

The three patients were transported to various hospitals in the greater Durban area for further medical care in a serious but stable condition

It is believed that the Honda was travelling towards Durban when it began to have mechanical problems, the other driver tried to avoid the Honda which had come to a standstill in the middle of the road and slammed into the back. The collision caused the toddler to be ejected from the vehicle and onto the road in front of him.

Metro police and SAPS were in attendance and would investigate the accident further.
