A 27-year-old man died after being hit by a train in Sebokeng on Saturday, paramedics said.

When paramedics arrived at the scene the man was lying on the side of the tracks surrounded by people, ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said.

He was in a critical condition having sustained a serious shoulder injury and a possible head injury.

Witnesses told paramedics that the man was attempting to cross the train tracks when he was clipped on his side by a train, she said.

It was unclear why the man did not see the train, or that if he did see the train, why he did not wait for the train to pass.

Jackson said it was believed that he managed to dodge in front of the north bound train but not the south bound train.

The 27-year-old was taken to the Sebokeng Provincial Hospital in a stable but critical condition, she said. – Sapa
