Damaged windscreen? Repair today to stop cracks in their tracks

Did you know that your car’s windscreen is one of the most important safety features of your vehicle, but also one of the most neglected? Think about it, we check our car’s oil, water, tyres and brakes. We service them regularly and make sure all the working parts are properly maintained.

Unfortunately, small windscreen chips and cracks are unavoidable and although they don’t usually constitute an immediate risk, leaving them unattended could compromises the strength of your windscreen and as a result, the overall structural integrity of your car. With your safety at risk, this could land up costing you more than just a replacement windscreen in the long run.

Depending on the size and location of cracks and chips, damaged windscreens can be safely repaired at a fraction of the cost of replacing the entire windscreen. Consider this for a moment – if you’re insured, windscreen chip repairs are cheaper than the excess on most windscreen claims plus claiming for such repairs doesn’t affect your claims history. Well, not at MiWay, at least!

So for example, chips less than 25mm in diameter, crater and combination chips less than 5mm in diameter, and cracks less than 150mm in length that don’t run from the edge of the windscreen can all be quickly and easily repaired. The only other prerequisite is that the damage cannot be in the driver’s line of vision – the area directly in front of the steering wheel, from dash to roof. No matter how tiny the damage, no repairs are permitted in this area.

Repairs to these fractures are very simple, with trained technicians using special technology to force the air out of the chip or crack and then replacing it with resin that matches your windscreen’s strength, tint and light refraction. A windscreen can be repaired in this way up to eight times, depending on the damage, before it will have to be replaced.

Windscreen chip repairs should be covered by your vehicle insurer and only undertaken by the service provider your insurer has allocated. MiWay only uses experienced, reputable service providers. These service providers always put your safety first before carrying out the repair.

Remember, leaving windscreen chips and cracks to spread not only puts you and your passengers at risk, but also reduces the chance of cost-effective repairs, forcing you to replace the entire windscreen at a much greater cost.
