Driver killed in N3 accident near Market Road in Pietermaritzburg

One person is dead and another person has sustained minor injuries after a collision on the N3 north bound in the right hand lane just after Market Road in Pietermaritzburg, in the late hours of yesterday evening.

ER24 paramedics from Pietermaritzburg arrived on the scene and found two light motor vehicles in the right hand lane of the freeway with glass and bits of the cars lying across the freeway. The driver of the first vehicle was entrapped but unfortunately had already succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased on scene by the paramedics. The driver of the other vehicle that collided into the first vehicle was treated on the scene for very minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

It is believed that the driver of the first vehicle may have been reversing in the right hand lane to get back on to Market Road on ramp when the second vehicle came into the blind corner and was unable to avoid the motorist and slammed into the back of the vehicle. It is unclear what made the driver to reverse in the right hand lane of the freeway but the local authorities will investigate the accident further.
