Eleven injured in Taxi collision in Pietermaritzburg


A serious collision between a small hatchback vehicle and a minibus taxi has left a total of eleven people with injuries this evening.

The collision occurred on the corners of Boshoff and Longmarket street in Pietermaritzburg. A Toyota hi-ace minibus taxi allegedly collided with the side of a small Opel Cadet at some speed. The collision was severe as one of the rear passenger seats in the taxi broke loose from the floor, hurling the passengers to the front of the vehicle.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they broke off the door from the taxi to free the injured occupants. A total of ten patients from the minibus taxi sustained injuries ranging from multiple scrapes and bruises to suspected spinal injuries. All the occupants from the Taxi were transported to various hospitals in the surrounding area.

The driver of the Opel Cadet sustained a serious injury to his face as well as a suspected back injury. He was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.

Local law enforcement authorities were at the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
