Six people die in a head on collision near Potchefstroom

A tragic motor vehicle collision thirty kilometers outside Potchefstrrom has left six people deceased and two survivors with critical injuries.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found a total of eight occupants. The collision occurred on the N12 highway approximately thirty kilometers outside Potchefstroom.

Paramedics at the scene were astonished at the amount of damage sustained by both vehicles.
A Mazda 3 and Renault Clio had collided head-on at high speed. Emergency personnel found two adults and one child aged approximately one and a half years old. All three of them had died on impact.

The fourth occupant, a female in her thirties was ejected from the vehicle and found a few meters away. She had sustained a severe head injury and injuries to her lower extremities. She was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital by another ambulance service.

The second vehicle involved in the collision also had four occupants, three adults and one seven year old boy. All three adults had sustained significant injuries in the collision and were found deceased upon the arrival of the paramedics. The boy had sustained a significant head injury and suspected injuries to his lower extremities.

Due to the distance to the nearest appropriate medical facility and the severity of the child’s injuries, the paramedics promptly dispatched the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to the scene. Within minutes the Medicopter had landed at the scene to airlift the boy to hospital.

With tomorrow being the end of a long holiday season, ER24 would like to urge motorists making a late return from their holiday destination to take extra precautions whilst driving home and to be vigilant of other vehicles around them.
