Man Trapped in overturned Bulldozer at Sandown

A man sustained serious injuries to his limbs and hips after the bulldozer he was travelling in overturned at the corners of Eaton Road and Oxford Avenue in Sandown this afternoon.

A witness to the incident said that the bulldozer was travelling down Eaton Road towards the intersection with Oxford Avenue when he went over a speed bump. The witness explained that the vehicle was not travelling fast, but suddenly began to swerve over the road, causing the driver to lose control. The bulldozer then bumped into the back of a Jaguar sedan which was travelling in the opposite direction. The rear bumper of the Jaguar was ripped off, but the woman driving the vehicle was lucky to have come off without and injuries.

The driver tried to regain control of his vehicle but eventually crashed into the pavement, ramping up onto the verge which was uneven. The bulldozer then overturned onto its right hand side, trapping the man within the compartment.

Fire and Rescue workers spent approximately 45 minutes trying to stabilise the heavy bulldozer and making sure to remve enough of the metal around the compartment so as to get the man out. ER24 paramedics stabilised the man and monitored his injuries. He was taken out from underneath the cabin and transported by ambulance to Sandton Medi Clinic where he would undergo the further necessary treatment.

The road was closed for the duration of the rescue.
