Sad day for emergency services as a hero loses his life

BETHLEHEM – It is a sad day for emergency services as a hero lost his life.

Last week paramedics were injured while they were busy attending to a truck accident on the R26 outside of Bethlehem towards Reitz. Two paramedics, Mr Mahlatsi from the provincial ambulance and rescue services as well as Mr Rheeder from ER24 were seriously injured when another truck crashed into the first accident.

This morning we have learned that Mr Mahlatsi sadly passed away after a week in hospital. Mr Mahlatsi sustained critical injuries and was treated at a local hospital in Bethlehem.

On behalf of our staff at ER24 we wish to offer our condolences to the Mahlatsi family and thank everyone that assisted in making him as comfortable as possible during the time he fought for his life. Heartbroken paramedics and fellow rescuers indicated that he was hard working and had an absolute passion for assisting those in need.

Mr Rheeder from ER24 is still recovering in Hoogland Mediclinic from multiple chest and shoulder injuries. We also wish Mr Rheeder and his family all the best and thank him for his passion to save the lives of others.

We urge the public to please take extra care when driving on our roads, especially past the scene of an accident.

Mr Mahlatsi, you will be remembered by all.
