Veld fires cause chaos on many roads

Two veld fires have caused havoc on the roads today as poor visibility caused collisions in two separate incidents.

Shortly past 16:00 this afternoon a veld fire next to the N12 highway caused twelve vehicles to pileup due to poor visibility caused by the smoke. As multiple emergency services from the surrounding area arrived at the scene it was established that approximately twenty patients sustained injuries in the collisions.

One female aged 28 sustained severe injuries to her lower extremities and pelvis. Paramedics promptly dispatched the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to the scene. She was treated and stabalised before being airlifted to Baragwanath Hospital for further medical care.

Earlier this afternoon poor visibility caused by a veld fire resulted in a female driver veering of the eMbhalenhle road in Mpumalanga. The lady drove into the burning veld which caused her vehicle to be engulfed with flames. When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the female removed from her burning car in the middle of the road.

She had sustained severe burns to more than half of her body. She was stabalised before being transported to the Highveld Medi-Clinic
