Multi Vehicle Pile Up on the N3

[Pietermaritzburg 13 July 2011 11:00]

Four trucks and four other vehicles have collided on the N3 Durban bound between the Nottingham Road an Mooi River Road exit.

It is not clear at this stage what caused the accident to occur, but the 8 vehicles took up all lanes of the south bound carriageway and only one lane of the north bound carriageway remained open.

ER24 paramedics arrived to find most of the vehicles still entangled into one another with the others a short distance away with severe damage. A man was found in one of the trucks, entrapped in his seat in the cabin and sadly he did not survive the accident and died at the scene due to the severe injuries that he had sustained. There were another three men  from the other vehicles that needed to be stabilised at the scene as they had sustained serious injuries. They were all in a stable condition as they were transported per ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The occupants of the other vehicles were fortunately not physically injured and they left the scene with private transport.

The road will remain closed for an unspecified period due to clean up operations and investigations that will be conducted by the officials who attended the scene.
