Road Safety Campaign Highlights the Importance of Driver Wellness

The Chemical and Allied Industries‘ Association (CAIA) recently partnered with the Gauteng Department of Health and N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) to conduct a Truck Driver Wellness Day at Heidelberg Weighbridge north bound.

“We were delighted to have the opportunity to be involved in this very worthwhile initiative,” says CAIA Responsible Care manager, Louise Lindeque. “Road safety is particularly important to the chemical industry, which relies on its partners in the transport sector to safely convey products that may include dangerous goods such as hazardous chemicals.”

Lindeque adds that human factors such as driver wellness are critical in preventing and mitigating road safety incidents. “The health status of truck drivers plays a significant role in road safety incidents and creating awareness through campaigns like this is a fun and effective way to alert drivers and their employers to the importance of staying healthy on the road.”

Drivers were stopped and offered tests for common ailments such as high blood pressure and poor eyesight. CAIA Responsible Care handed out road safety posters and lunchboxes filled with healthy snacks to remind drivers to take care of themselves while on long-haul journeys.

CAIA is the custodian in South Africa of Responsible Care – a global initiative by the chemical industry to continuously improve safety, health and environmental (SHE) performance. Companies sign a voluntary pledge committing to the Guiding Principles of Responsible Care – which include an employee health and safety guidline that requires signatories to ensure that employees are fit for duty.
