CONTERMANSKLOOF 10 August 2011, 08:00

One man has been seriously injured this morning after being struck by a vehicle at high speed on the Potsdam road near Bothasig.

The man believed to be aged in his thirties was attempting to cross the road to go to his place of work in at the Contermanskloof industrial area. He was then struck by a small Honda hatchback.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they could see that the collision was severe. The impact between the man and the vehicle had left a large gaping hole in the windshield and it was evident from the damage sustained to the vehicle that the pedestrian would be critical.

The man had sustained severe injuries to his head and face. Paramedics from ER24 and Life Vincent Pallotti performed Advanced Life Support care on the badly injured patient whilst the local fire and rescue services kept the scene safe.

Due the patients severe injuries and the distance to the nearest appropriate medical facility, paramedics promptly dispatched the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to the scene. The man was then treated before being airlifted to Tygerberg hospital for further medical care.

Potsdam road was closed for traffic whilst the Medicopter had landed on the scene. Local law enforcement authorities who attended the scene will be investigating the incident further.
