A serious collision occurred this morning on the R300 highway near Vangaurd drive in Mitchells Plain. Misty weather had engulfed the highway and adverse driving conditions could be observed on most of the freeway.

The cause of the collision is still unknown, but it seems that a single vehicle had crossed the centre median into oncoming traffic. What happened next is unknown, but a total of 10 motor vehicles collided into each other.

Various ambulance services including the provincial Department of Health: Emergency Medical Services and Rescue services attended the scene. Debris and wrecked vehicles was spread over a 30 meters radius over both incoming and outgoing lanes.

A total of 12 patients were treated for injuries ranging from suspected back and neck injuries to multiple scrapes and bruises and were transported to various hospitals in various ambulances.

Traffic on the R300 was disrupted as both ingoing and outgoing lanes were closed whilst rescue personnel attended the scene. Local law enforcement authorities who attended the scene will be investigating the incident.
