A timber truck travelling towards Umbumbulu on the Umbulmbulu Road collided head on with a bakkie which was travelling in the direction of Pietermaritzburg. The incident happended shortly after 16:30 this afternoon, leaving the driver of the bakkie dead at the scene.
ER24 paramedics stated that the bakkie must have rolled approximately 70 meters after the initial point of impact with the truck, and the bakkie was found lying off the road on its side. The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was still entrapped. He had sustained massive bodily harm and there was nothing paramedics could do for him; he had been killed in the accident. Paramedics were not able to make out the age of the man due to the severity of injuries that he had sustained.
The timber truck had also left the road after the impact, but the driver was fortunately not injured.
Police will investigate.
