Bakkie crashes into bridge pillar

[Vereeniging 15 November 2011 07:00]

A man has sustained critical injuries after his bakkie crashed into the Johan Le Roux Bridge on the R59 this morning.

The bakkie was the only vehicle involved in the accident, and it is not yet clear as to why the driver lost control and crashed into the bridge. It appears that the man was traveling along the R59 in the direction of Vanderbijlpark from the direction of Vereeniging when the vehicle crashed into the concrete side pillar. The front left of the vehicle was completely destroyed with the left front tyre being ripped from the body of the bakkie. Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the road strewn with pieces of the destroyed vehicle.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was treated for serious injuries. He was stabilised at the scene and taken to the Midvaal Hospital for further treatment.

The incident will be investigated by the local authorities.
