Four people, including two children, sustained multiple injuries in a collision on Barrage Road in Van der Bijl Park this evening.

It is understood that an Audi and a Toyota Yaris collided with each other leaving the family of four trapped in their vehicle for some time.

Paramedics that arrived on the scene found the severely mangled Yaris with its occupants still inside of it. Two children believed to be aged between one and three years sustained multiple injuries. One of the children sustained serious head injuries during the collision. The driver and his wife also sustained multiple injuries.

Rescue personnel spent over an hour to free the woman from the wreckage. Rescue equipment including hydraulic tools had to be used. Once freed, paramedics noticed that the woman sustained extensive injuries to her lower extremities. A Medicopter with specialised staff was called to the scene to airlift the woman to a hospital for further medical care.

It is believed that the driver of the Audi sustained minor injuries.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known and will be investigated.
