Gabriel Sponsors Attempt at Land Rover Guinness Record

In a two-day event on the 3-4 March 2012 that will incorporate an expo and camping, an attempt will be made at the Guinness World Record for the most Land Rovers in a convoy. The current record is 348 vehicles.

Gabriel shock absorbers, the premier brand of the Control Instruments-Automotive group, is the first company to commit to sponsorship of the event.

“This is an opportunity for ordinary Land Rover owners to get together on an arranged basis,” said Craig Dutton, founder of the website My Land Rover Has a Soul.com.

“We researched this type of festival and found an interesting Guinness World Record fact about the ‘most Land Rovers on parade’, which was around the 260 mark. Only a couple of months ago this record was beaten and verified, and now stands at 348 vehicles,” said Dutton.

“We are confident that we can beat that record. We have already past 33% of our targeted 349 pre-registered attendees and are well on our way to achieving our goal.”

“I know that the Land Rover Club of Southern Africa was involved with Kingsley Holgate’s ‘longest humanitarian convoy’ of Land Rovers and there have been other festivals where they have had large Land Rover gatherings,” he said.

“This will be different as we plan to go exactly according to the specifications and rules of the Guinness World Records organisation as we try to officially break the record,” he said.

Dutton said that he has registered an application with the Guinness World Records to proceed with the attempt.

The event will be in Three Rivers, Vereeniging in a controlled environment. Dutton hopes that this will eventually become an annual event similar to some of the Land Rover gatherings in the UK.

“Great things start with small steps, so for this our first year, we will be having a small expo. I want to see if Land Rover owners are as fanatical as they say they are and attend the record attempt and the festival. The website address is www.landyfestival.co.za,” he said.
