R44 accident leaves 1 dead and 6 injured

[Stellenbosch 10 February 23:00]

According to witnesses, a Toyota Yaris collided with a stationary Ford sedan on the R44 between Tennantville and Long Street South in Stellenbosch.

Three young ladies and three young men were traveling in the Yaris, all believed to be students, aged in their early 20’s. In the Ford was a father, mother and their young daughter.

It appears that the Ford may have broken down, and the father was just getting out of the vehicle when the impact took place. He was left with critical injuries and needed to be placed on life support equipment. He was taken to Tygerberg Hospital by ambulance. Fortunately his wife and daughter were left with no physical injuries and they were removed from scene privately.

The young lady who was driving the Yaris was left with minor injuries, while the other two ladies and two young men needed treatment for moderate injuries. Sadly, one of the young men had died at the scene from extensive traumatic injuries and there was nothing more that could be done for him.

All five of the patients were taken to Mediclinic Stellenbosch for further care after they had received the appropriate treatment by paramedics on scene.

Police will be investigating the cause of the accident.
