Seventeen Injured In Accident On The R59

[VEREENIGING – 16 FEBRUARY 2012 AT 18H15]

A collision on the R59 between Sasolburg and Johannesburg involving a 1 ton bakkie and a light motor vehicle has left seventeen people injured this evening.
It is believed that the bakkie was carrying construction workers from Sasolburg and was heading in the direction Johannesburg when the head on collision occurred with the light motor vehicle. The impact caused the bakkie to overturn numerous times and ripping the canopy open in the interim and landing off to the side of the road.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and found the construction workers lying either next to the bakkie or else on the road side near to the impact. The light motor vehicle was still on the road side. Paramedics assessed the patients and found they had suffered multiple cuts, broken bones, suspected neck and back injuries. The driver of the light motor vehicle sustained neck and back injuries. Seventeen patients were treated on scene and transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care.

The local authorities would be investigating the accident further.
