Bakkie crashes into back of truck near Samrand exit

[Midrand 13 April 2012 12:00]

Both vehicles were travelling in the direction of Pretoria on the N1 when the Opel Corsa bakkie crashed into the back of a truck near the Samrand exit. It is however, not yet clear as to what caused the accident.

Paramedic and Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the scene to find the bakkie wedged into the back and the front of the bakkie underneath the back of the truck. They immediately rushed to the cabin of the bakkie to determine the extent of injuries to the occupants.

Miraculously, the driver, a man in his 30’s, was moving around in the vehicle and was alert and conscious. He was only complaining of pain to his head, where upon further inspection revealed a small scratch to his forehead. The back of the truck was mere centimeters from where his head had been.

Fire and Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to remove the roof and sides of the bakkie in order to get the man out. The damage to the bakkie from the impact was preventing access to the man and paramedics climbed into the cabin to further assess the man while he was being cut free.

Paramedics could not find any other physical injuries that the ma had suffered, but they took him through to Unitas hospital by ambulance in order for him to undergo further assessment.

There had been no one else injured in the accident.
