Boy aged 7 dies, Grandmother seriously injured in N17 accident

DELMAS 19 April 2012, 10:15

A seven year old boy has died and his grandmother has sustained serious injuries following a single vehicle incident on the N17 near Delmas this morning.

The cause of the accident is unclear at this stage, but a grandmother and her seven year old grandchild were the only occupants of a Mazda2 hatchback during the incident. It seems as if the vehicle had veered from the road before overturning multiple times.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the boy outside the badly wrecked vehicle. Unfortunately the child had sustained various fatal injuries and was later declared dead at the scene.

The grandmother, believed to be aged in her mid 60’s, was entrapped in the vehicle as bent metal was pinning her in the wreck. Rescue workers from the local fire and rescue services used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment to cut the vehicle in order to free the badly injured grandmother.

On-scene paramedics promptly dispatched the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to the scene. The grandmother then received treatment for suspected back, neck, chest and pelvic injuries as well as broken arms and a broken leg. She was rapidly airlifted to Union Hospital for further treatment.

Local law enforcement officials attended the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
