Five injured in side impact collision in Athlone

[Athlone 15 April 2012 07:30]

A white Uno crashed into the driver’s side of an Opel Kadett this morning at the corners of Jan Smuts Drive and Klipfontein Road in Athlone.

It is believed that one of the vehicles crossed the intersection at the wrong time leading to the accident. There had been two adults and a baby traveling in the Uno, while a woman and man were in the Opel.

The driver of the Opel needed to be extricated from the vehicle as the door was so badly damaged that paramedics could not get him out without assistance from the Rescuers. The Department of Helath Provincial Emeregncy Medical Services team assisted the ER24 paramedics at the scene and together they ensured that all five patients received the appropriate treatment on scene.

The two occupants of the Opel were taken to Vincent Palotti hospital, while the mother and father in the Uno were taken to Groote Schuur hospital and the baby to the Red Cross Childrens Hospital.

All of the patients had suffered moderate injuries and were in a stable condition.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
