5 injured in Borchards Quarry road collision

[AIRPORT INDUSTRIA, Cape Town, Western Cape, 07 May 2012, 21:20]

Five people sustained various injuries late yesterday evening following a collision on Borchards Quarry road near the Cape Town Airport industria.

The cause of the collision is unclear at this stage, but a large truck had collided with the rear of a BMW passenger vehicle. The truck then overturned onto its right side and skidded across the road before coming to a standstill a few meters further.

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found that three occupants, two female and one male, was entrapped in the BMW as the doors were bent shut. The vehicle then started to burn with the occupants still inside. Paramedics reacted promptly by using a portable fire extinguisher on the flames and by breaking the windows of the vehicle to extricate the occupants.

The male driver sustained no injuries in the collision. The two female occupants received treatment at the scene for various scrapes and bruises before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

There were three occupants in the truck at the time of the collision. The driver of the truck was entrapped in the vehicle as it had pinned his right arm under the truck when it overturned onto its side. Paramedics extricated the man before treating him at the scene for a broken right arm as well as suspected back and neck injuries. The other two occupants sustained minor injuries only in the form of multiple scrapes and bruises. The three men were later transported to Mediclinic Milnerton for further care.

Local law enforcement officials attended the scene and will be investigating the incident further. Traffic in the area was affected while Emergency Medical Services attended the scene.
