Fatal accident in Pietermaritzburg

[Pietermaritzburg, KZN 27 May 2012 14:00]

A side impact collision at the corners of Commercial and Prince Alfred in Pietermaritzburg has left a woman deceased and another three patients with various injuries.

It was a family of four travelling in the BMW at the time of the collision, with the husband driving the vehicle and the two children aged 10 and 18 seated in the back. The driver of the Golf had been the only occupant.

The red VW Golf collided with the front passenger side of the yellow BMW 3 Series, leaving the woman in her late 30’s sitting in the front passenger seat of the BMW with such severe injuries that she died at the scene. Her husband had suffered minor injuries while the 18 year old girl and 10 year old boy had suffered multiple broken bones. Fortunately, although their injuries were serious, they were in a stable condition and were treated by paramedics while Fire and Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to cut the wreckage of the BMW open in order for the patients to be removed. They were taken per ambulance to St. Anne’s Hospital.

The driver of the VW Golf was found walking around on the scene, and despite the damage to the front of his vehicle he was left with no physical injuries.

The police will be investigating the cause of the accident and as to who was at fault.
