Farewell to four of AutoZone’s long serving staff members retiring this month

AutoZone Pinetown Store Manager: Kevin Sewell

In the photo left to right are: Alvin Govender (Regional Operations and Store Development Manager), Kevin Sewell (AutoZone Pinetown Store Manager)

Kevin’s family: Married to Beverley and has a daughter, Kymora who is married and resides in Nelspruit.

Kevin was born in Bulawayo on 8th June 1945, he joined the group in the Elpar Durban store as Branch Manager – December 1995. Elpar was acquired by Motolink, and later by Super Group. Kevin moved to Elpar Port Elizabeth as Branch Manager 1999. Sometime later Elpar PE and FEMO PE merged to become AutoZone and later AutoZone Hyper PE after which he returned to Durban in 2006 when he transferred to and served as Branch Manager AutoZone Pinetown until June 2012.

Ask Kevin about his saddest moments:

Seeing our Durban branch squeezed into a store front at a Standard Bank branch in May Street, only 100 square meters.
Closing the doors of Elpar in Greyville and bidding farewell to the “family” of staff members he worked with.
Seeing the PE branch relocate to an undesirable location near an “adult entertainment store” making for some interesting customers.

Kevin’s Happiest moments with the company:

Friday evening ”staff” meetings at both Elpars and the great times and memories.
The friendship and camaraderie of others at branch get-togethers, regional meetings or award ceremonies.

Most embarrassing moments:

Hearing that a director would be visiting the branch during the day, he returned to the branch and enquired in a loud voice if the “Shorty” had been in as yet. Unbeknown to him a salesman had been furiously trying to signal that the director was already in his office. “He was however non-perplexed while crunching my hand in greeting as I tried to explain rather stupidly I had been referring to a difficult customer!!” Kevin said.

Bala Reddy has worked for AutoZone for 32 years and started his career at Eddies Pretoria in 1980.

Bala held various positions such as Internal Sales until 2007 when he became AutoZone Pretoria Central’s local buyer. He remembers a time that he calls “the prime of his life” when he was young and physically active at work and in his private life. He achieved the Top Salesman Award from Eddies Spares and recognition from his peers and management. Bala enjoys spending time with his family and friends as well as watching cricket, rugby and motorsports.

Nico has two children and is looking forward to spending more time with them in the future.

AutoZone thanks Kevin, Bala, Vijay and Nico for their contribution over the years and wishes them both all the best for their future.
