Speeding truck driver causes havoc

This Morning (20 June) a cargo truck carrying cement was allegedly speeding and driving recklessly down Barbara Road in Primrose.

Terence Teixeira from the Matrix Road Safety Association, who arrived at the scene reports, that the cargo truck is alleged to have forced a passenger vehicle off the road while trying to overtake a delivery truck. The cargo truck then collided with the delivery truck causing it to flip onto its side, injuring the 2 occupants.

Teixeira says the cargo truck came to a stop approximately 200-300 meters away from the accident scene as a result of the speed he was travelling.  He was then allegedly assaulted with a brick by the occupants of the passenger vehicle, who apparently stopped next to the cargo truck before fleeing the scene.

The Matrix Road Safety Association vehicle closed the road for scene safety and the on-board Emer-G-Med medic assisted fellow medics already on scene to treat and stabilize the injured from the delivery truck.

Emer-G-Med paramedics treated and transported 2 patients who had sustained moderate injuries. Metro Police were also on scene and will be investigating the matter further.

Excessive speed and unsafe following distances remain a primary cause of accidents on our roads.  Texeira urges motorists, particularly truck drivers to maintain a minimum of 3 seconds following distance. “Failure to adhere to this increases the risk considerably resulting in the driver often running out of space and/or time as was the case today. This 3 second following distance is extremely important in a pre-pass situation, ensuring added forward visibility and space to increase speed before overtaking. “
