Delmas crash leaves one man dead, nine injured

A man was killed and nine other people were injured, six of whom critically, when a bakkie and a light motor vehicle collided head-on on the Delmas Road R50 near the Pretoria Road R51 junction in Bapsfontein this afternoon.

The cause of the accident and the series of events preceding it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

Common cause information indicates that an errant party veered from their allocated lane and the two vehicles collided and a high rate of speed. The force of impact saw the light motor vehicle overturn and roll from the carriageway, coming to rest adjacent to the road.

The bakkie, which had been carrying seven workers on the back, skidded to a halt near the initial point of impact. The workers were flung into the carriageway on impact.

One critically injured man was airlifted by an Emergency Helicopter to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital. The other wounded were transported by ambulance to nearby medical facilities.
