Seventeen Injured In Umkomaas Taxi Accident

[UMKOMAAS, KZN – 17 JULY 2012 AT 10H00]

A fully loaded taxi has over turned on the N2 Durban bound near to the Umkomaas off ramp, leaving seventeen people injured this morning.

ER24 and EMRS arrived on the scene and found the taxi on its side in the middle of the freeway causing minor traffic congestion. The commuters were found seated and lying down in the centre medium of the freeway when emergency personnel arrived.

The paramedics assessed the patients and found that two commuters had suspected neck and back injuries and needed Advanced Life Support to help stabilise the patients further. Fifteen others patients including the driver of the taxi were treated for minor to moderate injuries. All patients were stabilised on scene and transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care.

The circumstances around the incident are not clear but its believed that the taxi may have had some sort of mechanical problem which caused the driver to lose control and over turn. The local authorities were on scene and would investigate the incident further.
