Elderly man injured in Benoni accident

A 76 year old man has been injured in a side impact collision in Benoni.

At the corners of 7th street and 4th avenue in Northmead, one of the vehicles must have crossed at the wrong time leading to the collision taking place. The Isuzu single cab bakkie crashed into the side of the Opel Monza leaving the drivers side so badly damaged that the elderly man was not able to be easily removed. Paramedics stabilised the man inside the vehicle for his injuries, which included a deep cut to his head, broken ribs and other internal injuries, while the Fire Department cut the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

40 minutes later, the patient could be removed and he as taken to the Life Glynnwood hospital by ambulance. He was in a stable condition but would require extensive treatment in hopaital for his injuries.

The elderly man had been alone in the car at the time of the accident. The occupants of the bakkie were checked by paramedics but were found to have not sustained any physical injuries.
