The final event of the 2012 MiWay Big 5 Mountain Bike Series takes place at Kwambonambi in Zululand on Sunday 30 September.

The Kwambo Lion MTB race promises an exhilarating 50km route for those up to the challenge, a rider-friendly 25km route for those who want to take it a bit easier, and a 10km fun ride for the kids and newbies.

The series has delivered spectacular scenery, tough courses and even some dramatic wipe-outs so far, and the last challenge promises more of the same.

The Kwambo Lion MTB race will start from the Kwambonambi Club in Kwambonambi, 180km north of Durban, with the little Zululand town coming alive with activities for the whole family. Supporters can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as the club’s facilities, a Kid Zone and catering stalls. Camping facilities will also be available near the clubhouse, with showers, toilets, bar, restaurant and braai facilities at no extra cost.

For participants, the 50km route promises plenty of excitement, taking riders mainly along single tracks in plantations and through very scenic landscapes in the tribal lands surrounding Kwambonambi. A definite highlight is the climb up to Double Storey hill followed by the most exhilarating downhill of the series. The most exciting change to the route compared to 2011 is the removal of the district road section, which has been replaced with glorious single and jeep tracks, making this the must-do track!

The 25km route is a fast, rider-friendly route, mainly along single track with some gravel roads.

For the little ones – and those testing the mountain biking waters – there is a 10 km fun ride, mainly along farm roads. This will take place during the staging of the 25 km and 50 km race, with plenty of lucky draw prizes for the kiddies.
