Nine People Injured In Five Vehicle Pile Up
[CAMPERDOWN, KZN – 5 SEPTEMBER 2012 AT 15H45]
Two people are in a serious condition and seven other people have sustained minor to moderate injuries after a truck, a taxi and three light motor vehicles have been involved in a collision on the N3 Pietermaritzburg bound between the Umlaas Road and Lynnfield Park this afternoon.
ER24 and EMRS paramedics arrived on the scene and found three light motors off to the side of the road with minor damage due to side swiping while trying to avoid the accident. The taxi was wedged into the back of the truck in the left hand lane of the freeway.
Paramedics went from vehicle to vehicle to assess you was injured. Two people, one male and one female, who where in the front of the taxi were entrapped and were in a serious condition. Six commuters were found seated in the taxi and one person from the light motor vehicle had sustained minor to moderate injuries. The Fire Department used the Jaws of Life and other rescue equipment to help extricate the two front passengers. Advanced Life Support intervention was being performed on the patients to help stabilise them due to the injuries they had sustained in the accident. Once freed, they were placed on specialised boards and stabilised further. The seven other patients were treated for cuts and abrasions and suspected neck and back injuries.
All patients were stabilised by ER24 and EMRS and were transported to various hospitals in the greater Pietermaritzburg area for further medical care.
The necessary authorities were on the scene and would investigate the accident further but it’s believed that poor visibility and wet weather conditions may have been one of the factors that caused the accident.
