Truck driver perishes in N3 truck blaze

[PIETERMARITZBURG, KZN, 20 September 2012, 04:20]

One driver has died and four people have sustained injuries following a collision between two trucks on the N3 highway in Pietermaritzburg this morning.

The cause of the collision is unclear at this stage, but one of the trucks had collided with the rear of another truck on the infamous Apples Bend. Both trucks then veered off of the highway and down an embankment. The rear truck was transporting a full load of cotton and caught fire shortly after coming to a standstill.

The driver of the truck was entrapped in the vehicle and had died in the fire. Two other occupants who were in the truck at the time of the collision managed to remove themselves from the cab prior to it catching fire. Both men sustained minor injuries only in the form of scrapes and bruises as well as suspected back and neck injuries.

Another two occupants from the other truck received treatment and transportation from the scene by another ambulance service. Both trucks were well alight when paramedics left the scene. Traffic on the highway has been affected by the collision.
