Two Killed in collision between a bakkie and a tanker on the N2 about 20km outside of Kokstad

[KOKSTAD, KZN – 07 SEPTEMBER 2012 AT 15H30]

Two people have been killed and another person has sustained minor injuries after a collision between a bakkie and a tanker on the N2 about 20km outside of Kokstad in the direction of Harding this afternoon.

ResQmed arrived on the scene with other emergency personnel and found the tanker and bakkie totally engulfed in flames. The whole road was blocked off to traffic due to the fire. The truck driver was found some distance away from the accident. He was treated for minor cuts and abrasions and taken to hospital for further medical treatment.

Fire Department were able to extinguish the flames after a long battle and found the driver and passenger still inside the bakkie completely burnt past recognition. The Jaws of Life was used to extricate the deceased from the burnt out wreckage.

It is believed that the driver of the bakkie lost control while going around the corner and collided into the side of the truck. The driver of the truck was able to escape through a side window when the explosion occurred. Traffic was severely affected in the area but one lane has now been reopened with the help of the local authorities monitoring the traffic flow.
