Two men killed on the N4 outside of Middelburg

[Middelburg, MP 06 September 2012 18:30]

The call came in to Middelburg paramedics around 18:30 this evening, notifying them of the horrific accident that had taken place on the N4.

Approximately 12 kilometers outside of town in the direction of Belfast, they found the scene where a Toyota Tazz and a flatbed truck carrying a load of steel had collided head on. The Tazz was crushed underneath the front of the truck; the metal of both vehicles mangled and still fixed into one another. The two vehicles had come to rest in the field at the side of the road, almost 150 meters from where the initial impact is believed to have taken place.

Although the cause of the accident will still be determined through thorough investigation by local authorities, it appears that one of the causes was the extreme weather throughout the region today, leading to the road being very slippery and water logged.

Upon assessing the two people who had been traveling in the Tazz at the time, it was immediately determined that their injuries had been fatal, and the extent of damage to their bodies would leave nothing more for paramedics to do for them but sadly declare them deceased. All that could be noted is that both occupants were men, and that they were trapped in the wreckage until the necessary services used hydraulic equipment to remove their remains.

Despite the damage to the front of the truck, both driver and co-driver were left with no injuries and they both were removed from the scene privately.
