Bakkie gets stuck in roadside barrier, preventing it from rolling down a hill

[Carletonville, NW 28 October 2012]

A Toyota bakkie was travelling on the R500 between Carletonville and Fochville this afternoon, just after a heavy rainstorm, when suddenly the car started to slid on the wet surface in the vicinity of the area locals call Monkey Mountain.

The bakkie then went backwards through the road side barrier, fortunately getting stuck between the metal, thus preventing the vehicle from rolling completely down the embankment.

Paramedics and the fire department arrived at the scene and found a 40 year old woman, still sitting in the drivers seat, while a boy who appeared to be around the age of 13 was able to climb from the vehicle as it hung precariously from the barrier. The woman was panic stricken, but paramedics and the fire department team calmed her while they stabilised the vehicle before anyone could get to her or bring her from the wreckage.

The barrier on her side of the vehicle was crushing the door inward, and she would have to be assisted out of the passenger side.

Luckily, the woman had sustained only minor injuries, but she was taken to Leslie Williams hospital by ambulance for treatment of shock and her minor injuries. The boy was thoroughly checked by paramedics, but he was collected from scene by his father who went through with him to Leslie Williams Hospital to meet with his mom.
