Elderly ladies injured in Bethlehem collision

Four elderly ladies sustained serious injuries this afternoon following a two vehicle collision on the R712 near Bethlehem.

The events leading up to the collision is unclear at this stage, but a bakkie had collided into the rear side of their vehicle as it was turning into a road. The vehicle then spun around before partially leaving the road and coming to a standstill on the shoulder.

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene to find that three of the ladies were entrapped in the vehicle as bent steel was preventing them for exiting the vehicle. Paramedics later used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut the vehicle in order to free the patients.

Once extracted from the vehicle paramedics treated the patients for injuries such as suspected back and neck injuries, various broken bones, chest injuries and various scrapes and bruises. The patients were then transported to various hospitals by various ambulance services.

The driver of the bakkie sustained no injuries in the collision. local law enforcement officials attended the collision and will be investigating the cause of the collision further.
