Fatal accident on the N1 highway

[Florida Glen, GP 09 October 2012 07:15]

The wet roads due to the early morning rain may have played a part in the cause of the fatal accident that took place on the N1 south highway in Roodepoort this morning. A witness to the accident explained that it appeared that the driver of the Opel Corsa hatchback suddenly lost control and the vehicle then crashed head on into the concrete bridge pillar of Gordon road running over the highway.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find that the car was crushed up into the bridge, with the engine compartment already smoldering. The Fire Department were thankfully on their way already, and would be able to put out any fire that may start in the vehicle.

Due to the extensive force of the car into the concrete pillar, the entire front compartment of the car was crushed in, and the driver had been killed. Paramedics were almost unable to assess the 61 year old man due to him being so extensively crushed, but they were able to determine by various tests that nothing more could be done to save the man’s life. While the Fire Department crew started up their hydraulic equipment, the man was declared dead. His remains would be removed after the vehicle was cut open using the Jaws of Life.

No one else had been in the Corsa at the time of the accident, and no other vehicles appear to have been involved.
