Interesting findings on alcohol breath measurement at the FNB Whisky Festival 03 to 05 October 2012

How much may we drink before it is deemed to be illegal to drive? We often find different variations of this question and always advise rather to abstain or to ensure designated driver services! At the recent FNB Whisky Festival there was a rather interesting stand where Breathalysers.co.za and iWyze offered an opportunity to attendees to test themselves.

These were some of the findings:

(Blood Alcohol Concentration) – this is a conversion from Mg/l which represents: Breath Alcohol Concentration
South African legal limit is 0.05% BAC or equivalent 0.24mg/l BrAC.

We tested 70 people and everyone was very interested in knowing their limit. Highest was 0.3%BAC and 0.2 %BAC. A few people came back for testing a second time. One woman who was the designated driver tested 0.04%BAC, I advised her to have no more drinks for the evening. She came back about an half hour later and took the test again after just drinking water and her result was 0.02%BAC, she was very happy as they were only leaving then.

We tested 109 people last night and high levels again – 0.4%BAC a lot of people and a 75 year old lady tested 0.37%BAC.  We had only 2 people the evening that were under the legal limit that visited the stand. There were a lot of younger people that came to the stand to be tested although they were on 0.04%BAC and 0.3%BAC.

We tested 134 people. It was a busy evening and we had quite a few foreigners that came to the stand to be tested, although they were walking to their hotels. They were quite amazed that we were doing this initiative as overseas you do not drink and drive. The other visitors to the stand were quite impressed with the initiative and a few people wanted to buy our expensive breathalyzers we use for the settings.

Every evening a lot of the visitors to the stand made sure they made a turn for another test before they left. An interesting fact was that most people had designated drivers (so they said), some were taking a cab home and 3 gents came for a test while they were waiting for their wives to collect them.
