Crisis Medical Paramedics responded to a serious accident on the M4 outside Tongaat beach at 19:45 this evening.
On arrival, paramedics found a scene stretching nearly 100mts with patients strewn across the freeway. They immediately set about prioritising the patients according to injuries. In total 9 people were seriously injured with 1 being critically injured. All of the patients were immobilised and stabilised for a variety of injuries before being transported to various hospitals for further medical care.
From on scene reports, it is believed that a vehicle strayed from its lane and collied in a side impact manner with another vehicle before coming to rest some distance away. The resulting accident caused serious traffic disruptions with Metro Police closing the freeway between Ballito and Tongaat in both directions. Traffic was diverted onto the N2 while paramedics attended to the injured and for recovery operations to take place.
SAPS were on hand to investigate the exact cause of the accident.
