Four Dead, One Airlifted On N12 Accident Near Potchefstroom


[POTCHEFSTROOM, GP – 22 DECEMBER 2012]

A metallic green Toyota Camery with five occupants traveling on the N12 towards Klerksdorp about 30km outside of Potchefstroom, lost control of the motor vehicle and veered across the N12 over the centre medium and collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction this morning.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and found the two vehicles just off to the side of the road with the light motor vehicle in front of the truck. The truck collided in to the passenger side of the vehicle. All five occupants of the vehicle were assessed and found they were severely entrapped. The three back passengers a female and two males, plus the front passenger a male had sustained very traumatic and fatal injuries and were declared deceased on scene.

The driver was in a critical condition as he had sustained multiple traumatic injuries and needed Advanced Life Support intervention. The Jaws of Life and other rescue equipment were used to extricate the driver from the vehicle. Once freed, he was stabilised further and was airlifted by AER24 Medicopter to Milpark Hospital for rapid medical care.

The truck driver had sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for further medical care. The four deceased were extricated by the Fire Department.

The local authorities were on the scene and would investigate the accident further.
