Woman and two men injured in PMB collision

[Pietermaritzburg Central, KZN 05 December 2012 13:00]

A woman and two men suffered various injuries after a collision took place between two vehicles on Victoria road in Pietermaritzburg Central.

A hatchback light motor vehicle and a minibus collided almost head on, where the damage to the hatch was more on the front right, while the minibus had straight head on damage. It is not clear as to what happened in causing the collision, but paramedics and rescuers arrived on the scene to find that the hatch had been pushed off the road and into a fence after the impact. The woman who was driving, who appeared to be around the age of 50, was trapped in her seat. While paramedics assessed her for her injuries, the rescuers set up their hydraulic rescue equipment. Due to the damage that the vehicle sustained during the impact, the Jaws of Life would be needed to cut away at the wreckage in order to free the trapped woman.

Approximately 20 minutes later, with paramedics treating the injured woman in the car, the patient was removed and placed into the waiting ambulance. She was treated en route for serious injuries and transported through to Greys Hospital for further care.

The two men who were travelling in the Iveco minibus at the time, had managed to climb out of the bus and were found lying on the ground close to the wreckage. They had both fortunately only sustained moderate injuries and they were taken to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg by ambulance where they were handed over to hospital staff in a stable condition.
