Toddler dies when four pedestrians were knocked down in Blue Downs

[Blue Downs, WC 20 January 2013]

Incident time: 15:00

Four pedestrians have been knocked down by a light motor vehicle while they were walking along the R300 in Blue Downs this afternoon.

The call came in shortly after 3pm and paramedics rushed to the scene. There had been two women and a man walking with a little boy around the age of 2, when a VW Citi Golf, which was travelling in the direction of Brackenfell, collided into them near the Van Riebeeck road off ramp.

The little boy had been flung from the road and was found lying down a short embankment at the side of the road. Sadly, his injuries had been too severe and he did not survive the accident. The three adults who had been walking with the child had all suffered moderate injuries and they were treated on scene and then taken to hospital for care.

The Citi Golf had veered off the road following the initial impact and had then rolled, colliding into a cement fence at the side of the road. The Rescue team had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the two occupants of the Golf from the wreckage as they had been trapped inside.

The woman and man in their 40’s had suffered moderate injuries and they too were taken to hospital once they had been safely removed from the vehicle.

All five patients were taken to the Tygerberg hospital for further are.
