Fatal collision on the R57

Incident time: 16:30

A man believed to be around the age of 50 has been killed after his bakkie rolled off the R57 in Vanderbijlpark this afternoon.

It is not clear as to how or why the collision occurred, but paramedics who attended the scene suspect that the Toyota Hilux collided first with a fuel tanker and then rolled landing back on its wheels on the off ramp to the Stokkiesdraaipad. The driver was found inside the vehicle, he was not trapped mechanically in the wreckage, but he was lifeless upon first assessment, and there was nothing more that could be done to save the man’s life and he was declared dead.

Fortunately there was no extensive damage to the fuel tanker causing any fuel leakage, and the tanker was then towed from the scene, the occupants not sustaining any physical injury as a result of the crash.
