Wet weather causes chaos on Durban roads

Collision on the M4 South before Edwin Swales

With the wet weather in Durban on Wednesday 10 April Rescue Care paramedics responded to multiple collisions in and around Durban. Below is a brief summary.

A collision occurred just after 7am on the M4 Durban bound just before Broadway offramp. Paramedics found that three vehicles had collided into each other leaving two people with minor injuries. Both the patients were stabilized on the scene and before being transported to local hospitals for further care.

Around 7:30am paramedics were called to the intersection of Umgeni Road and Supply Road. On arrival paramedics found that two vehicles had collided in the junction leaving one of the drivers entrapped in his vehicle. Once stabilized rescue officials used the jaws of life to free the injured man. The man was carefully extricated before being transported to St Augustine’s Hospital for further care that he required.

Just before 8am paramedics were called to the N3 Durban bound before spaghetti junction. Paramedics found that two vehicles had collided however fortunately no one had sustained any injuries.

Around 8:30am paramedics were called to a very serious collision on the corner of Old Fort Road and Prince Alfred Street in Durban Central. On arrival paramedics found that two vehicles had collided in the junction leaving multiple people hurt. More resources were called to assist with the number of casualties. One patient had sustained critical injuries and was placed on a ventilator before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care. Eleven people sustained various injuries and were all stabilized on the scene before being transported to various hospitals in Durban.

Just after 1pm paramedics were called to the M4 South before Edwin Swales offramp involving a taxi and two vehicles. On arrival paramedics found the two left lanes affected. A quick assessment revealed that six people had sustained various injuries. All the injured were stabilized on the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals for the further care that they required.

Just before 2pm a collision occurred at the intersection of Franscois Road and Maydon Road. Fortunately no one sustained any injuries.

Paramedics were called to another taxi accident just after 4:30pm on the N2 North bound before Claire Road. On arrival paramedics found that four people had sustained minor injuries. They were stabilized on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required. Traffic was severely affected as the two right lanes were severely affected.

A collision occurred just after 5pm at the intersection of Umgeni Road and Alpine Road. Two people suffered minor injuries and were stabilized before being transported by ambulance to St Augustine’s Hospital for further care.

Shortly after 6pm paramedics were called to the intersection of Nandi Drive and Newlands East Drive for a collision. On arrival paramedics found that one patient had sustained minor injuries. They were stabilized on the scene before being transported through to a nearby hospital for further care.

Paramedics urge drivers to slow down when it rains and increase following distance so in the event of an emergency you are able to stop in time before crashing into another vehicle.
