Early morning collision leaves 5 injured on the corner of Umbilo Road and Hillier Road

Just before 7am this morning Rescue Care paramedics were called to a serious collision on the corner of Umbilo Road and Hillier Road.

On arrival paramedics were shocked at what they found. Two vehicles had collided in the junction before one of the vehicles then hit a traffic light. Four occupants of the vehicle were severely entrapped in the wreckage. Rescue services were called in to assist freeing the injured. Paramedics worked to stabilize the four who had all sustained serious injuries. Advanced Life Support intervention was needed to stabilize the injured. Fire fighters as well as Search and Rescue SAPS then utilised hydraulic equipment to free the entrapped patients. The patients were then all carefully extricated using specialized equipment before being loaded into awaiting ambulances. The four patients were then transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required. One occupant of the second vehicle had sustained minor injuries and he too was transported to a nearby facility for further care.

It is unclear what caused the collision however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.

Traffic was severely affected as three lanes of Umbilo Road was closed whilst emergency personal worked to free the injured.
