A ten year old and an adult woman have been killed in a head on collision that took place on Edendale road in the vicinity of the Henley Dam location in Pietermaritzburg this evening.

At around 18:30 paramedics were called out to the scene of the crash which involved a small passenger bus and a VW Golf. Exact incident details and the cause of this fatal collision are still being investigated but the bus overturned after the impact and the VW Golf was extensively damaged.

In the Golf had been an adult woman and man and the ten year old child. At this time the child’s gender is not known.

Sadly, the child was found to have suffered fatal injuries and no more could be done to save the young life. The child was declared dead by paramedics. Both the woman and man were found to be trapped inside the wreckage of the Golf and both had suffered extensive and critical injuries. The man was treated for his critical injuries and placed under Advanced Life Support care. He was rushed through to a nearby hospital for further treatment and handed over to hospital staff in a critical condition. Paramedics tried to save the woman’s life and stabilise her injuries, but they had to start resuscitation efforts shortly after removing her from the wreckage and her condition did not improve. There was nothing more that could be done for her and she was later declared dead on scene.

Of the five occupants of the bus, only one was treated for minor injuries and removed from the scene by ambulance. The remaining occupants left the scene privately having suffered no physical injury.
